ETC Insect Ratings : A Critical Component

Published on 7 October 2024
The ETC also evaluates endophytes for their ability to increase the grasses tolerance against various pasture insect pests, including Argentine Stem Weevil, African Black Beetle, Pasture Mealy Bug, Root Aphid, Porina, and Grass Grub.

Each endophyte’s impact on both larvae and adult insects is documented, ensuring farmers have the information they need to make informed decisions when selecting cultivars.

The ETC’s annual revision of testing protocols for both animal and insect ratings underscores its commitment to thoroughness. Each endophyte must undergo three years of animal trials to assess safety and insect deterrence before reaching the market. Additionally, one year of testing for each new plant variety and endophyte combination helps guard against unexpected outcomes.

RGT18 has had many years of testing, with the data provided to the ETC.

Argentine stem weevil is prevalent across New Zealand, while Porina are found almost everywhere outside of the Northern North Island. Both are significant pasture pests that negatively affect productivity and persistence.

RGT18 enhances ryegrass tolerance to these insects. Additionally, Black beetle, another major pest, primarily affects certain regions of the North Island; however, RGT18 can help farmers mitigate its impact on their systems.

Yet, this is just the beginning of our testing. RAGT continues to seek improvements in what the RGT18 endophyte offers farmers. Ongoing work is focused on validating findings from our internal trials regarding other pests, such as pasture mealy bug and root aphid.

A smart alternative

Are your ryegrass paddocks struggling to persist due to environmental conditions? If so, alternative pasture species could provide the solution. One such option is Tall Fescue, particularly RGT Nouga, which is gaining widespread recognition as a high performing alternative to traditional ryegrass-based pastoral systems.

Maximise Pasture Productivity with Smart Sowing

Under-sowing involves drilling seed into existing pasture, typically in autumn. Maintaining pasture density through winter is essential for several reasons. Most importantly, higher density leads to increased yield. If plant numbers decline, your pasture is compromised in two ways: reduced immediate yield and diminished ability to recover after subsequent grazing’s.
