An endophyte is a naturally occurring fungus that lives within the ryegrass plant. It is carried in the seed and establishes at the base of the plant as it germinates and grows. Endophytes produce protective compounds called alkaloids, which can deter damaging insects and support pasture persistence. The challenge is that some alkaloids can also negatively affect animal health and performance, such as increasing the risk of ryegrass staggers. To solve this, seed companies develop novel endophytes, carefully selecting strains designed to maximise pest protection and persistence, while minimising or removing compounds linked to animal issues.
